Q&A WITH JULIE GREEN -  @simplygels_allesley

Q: What do you love most about HONA events?

A: Before attending my first HONA event, I felt like I worked very much on my own. I was chatting to my clients all day but that could still feel lonely, it’s not the same as being able to talk to people who really understand what you do. Then I got invited to HONA’s first event; the launch of their gel system and it was amazing! The HONA team were so relaxed and welcoming, I got to chat with other nail techs and could actually talk shop! I’ve now been to every HONA event and they are just the most amazing days.  Each one I go to I meet up with the friends I’ve made at previous events and make new friends too.  Everyone is nervous to attend their first event as they don’t know anyone but in a very short space of time it’s like being in a room surrounded by your besties. There was learning during the day that my business really benefited from and then the evenings were just one big party. I’ve made so many connections and a lot of us keep in touch regularly, it really is the best and most supportive community and it all starts with the events.

Q: What’s your absolute favourite HONA product and why?

A: This is such a difficult question, can I say two? Please? I absolutely love the detail paints, the consistency, the pigmentation and the range of colours is incredible. I’m not a natural artist but the detail paints make doing nail art a pleasure. I still look at some of my designs and am amazed I actually created them, I know it’s only been possible because of the quality of the detail paints.  

My other favourite is Pure Foundation, it’s an absolute dream of a product.  The application is so easy, it self levels beautifully making it so quick to apply, its retention is amazing  and I love the range of colours.
 

Q: Name 3 things you get joy from, being a nail tech

A: I love how a good set of nails makes my clients feel.  Watching them leave with big smiles on their faces is just the best feeling.  It’s such a gift to have a job that can brighten someone’s day.

I do love nail mail.  When I receive new goodies it is so exciting to tear open that parcel and go through everything. How great is it to do something for a living that means you get to order glitters, chromes and nail polishes? I always share my new additions into my client Facebook group and they’re just as excited as I am. 
Running my own business and being my own boss is a great feeling. I look at how far I’ve come and what I’ve achieved and feel extremely proud. Working hard for someone else doesn’t give you the same sense of satisfaction you get from working for yourself and achieving everything you hoped for.

Q: What resources or methods do you use to continue your education in the nail industry?

A: I do as much as I can to continue to improve either my technical skills or the business side of things. There is hardly a day that goes by that I’m not working on myself in one way or another. I’m a big believer in personal development so I read a lot of books as well as listen to podcasts.  I also watch a lot of YouTube videos to learn new techniques and get inspiration for designs. Mostly I watch and listen to others in the nail industry that inspire me, there’s always something new to learn from people that have been in the industry longer than myself. Having been inspired by so many people, myself and a fellow nail tech recently made the decision to give back and have even opened a Facebook group called Nailing The Steps to help and support others in the nail and beauty industry, it’s great being able to give back to others.
